When our golden retriever, Jessie, became a member of our family in 2004, we knew she would add love and joy to our lives. But we never expected that she would inspire a company!
How did it happen?
Like most smitten pet owners, we love our dog unconditionally. We immediately started spoiling her with fancy toys and gourmet goodies, grade A diets and doggie daycare. We bought her collars that showed off her personality. And, like pet owners everywhere who want to make sure their pets are safe, we attached one ID tag after another — dull, standard red or blue aluminum tags in the shape of a bone, or maybe, a nickel-plated heart or circle.
After the first tag was destroyed, we bought another. Then another. Quite simply, we lost count of how many tags we purchased. They ended up scratched and discolored, Jessie’s name and contact information illegible, or even lost altogether because of weak connectors.
There had to be a better choice.
We were determined to find an engravable ID tag tough enough to withstand our dog’s active lifestyle and attractive enough to hang from her collar. We hunted pet stores, specialty boutiques and the Internet. What we found? Flimsy, unstylish, and more aluminum.
We knew what we wanted, we just couldn’t find it. We wanted a tag that could be engraved with all the pertinent information, wouldn’t fade, discolor, or fall off, and would absolutely bowl us over with its beauty.
We decided to take matters into our own hands.
Collectors of fine jewelry, we began by consulting a designer and a jeweler. We explored the properties of precious metals, the strength of various bales and connectors, the staying power of various gems. Then we grilled a professional dog walker with 20 years under her belt to discover all the nuances of pup- and dog-powered tag destruction. Drawing on such expertise, we came up with a prototype that addressed both function and form.
But for the last piece in the puzzle, durability, we called in the real expert — Jessie. We put her to work rigorously testing our tags and their connectors. After three years of extensive swimming, rough-housing and racing through the woods, Jessie proved that our tags can withstand all the fun even the most active and rambunctious four-legged friend can dole out.
